An 18th-century inn, once a blacksmith's forge, offers hearty fare amid rustic charm.

About Smiths Arms

Located in the quaint hamlet of Beckwithshaw along the historic turnpike road from Otley, stands a charming 18th-century inn made of honey-coloured sandstone known as The Smiths Arms. The inn has been a central fixture in the Beckwithshaw community for generations. Its name originates from the original tenancy agreement, where the landlord, a blacksmith, was responsible for providing food and drinks to locals and travellers. Before the construction of the ‘National School’ in 1865, the upper room of the inn doubled as a schoolroom, evident from the remnants of external steps used by children to access their classes.

Formerly a blacksmith’s forge, this village inn in North Yorkshire is embraced by the ancient Haverah Park to the west, featuring serene reservoirs and wooded valleys. To the east, guests can explore the botanical wonders of the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr and the tree-lined streets of the elegant Georgian spa town of Harrogate. Nestled amidst the picturesque North Yorkshire countryside, The Smiths Arms offers a tranquil setting with a secluded beer garden perfect for enjoying the sunshine and cosy open fires to ward off the cold weather. It’s an ideal spot to savour a leisurely pub lunch, relishing in delightful seasonal specials, Sunday roasts, quality wines, and cask ales.

Situated at the heart of the tiny hamlet of Beckwithshaw on the old turnpike road leading from Otley to Killinghall, The Smiths Arms is a historic North Yorkshire inn constructed from honey-coloured sandstone, standing as one of the oldest structures in the village. The inn’s name reflects its original tenancy arrangement, where the landlord, who also served as the village blacksmith, not only maintained the horses and equipment from nearby Moor Park manor but also catered to the needs of the local community and travellers along the bustling coach route. The Smiths Arms is a dog-friendly establishment welcoming both visitors and locals alike to experience its warm hospitality and scenic surroundings.
