About Kings Head

The King’s Head is an 18th-century country pub situated in the heart of the historic market town of Masham, serving as a gateway to the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park. This Georgian-built establishment boasts a prime location overlooking the renowned market square, which has hosted bi-weekly markets since as far back as 1250. The King’s Head offers a range of ales that are so local they are brewed just a stone’s throw away. Visitors with a penchant for real ale can explore Theakston and Black Sheep Breweries in Masham before returning to the pub for a delectable meal.

Masham’s market square, one of the largest in the Yorkshire Dales, was a hub for sheep and cattle markets in the 18th and 19th centuries. To this day, markets still convene twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays right outside The King’s Head, creating a vibrant atmosphere in the town. Steeped in history, Masham traces its origins back to Saxon times, with the picturesque medieval Saint Mary’s Church on Cockpit Hill standing on a site that has been a place of worship since the 7th century, as documented in the Domesday Book.

Surrounded by the stunning North Yorkshire countryside, visitors to Masham and The King’s Head are treated to a plethora of scenic walks and attractions. From the breathtaking ruins of Jervaulx Abbey to the charming town of Thirsk, famously associated with James Herriott, and the elegant Georgian architecture of Harrogate, there is no shortage of sights to explore. Whether after an adventure in the Yorkshire Dales or planning a stroll through the scenic Lower Wensleydale, The King’s Head provides a welcoming and dog-friendly environment for patrons to relish a delightful pub meal.
