Situated on the old turnpike road from Warrington to Prescot in the ancient hamlet of Bold Heath, The Griffin Inn stands as an impressive 18th-century pub restaurant with a rich history. Once part of the estate owned by one of the area’s most esteemed ancient families, the inn has been a significant landmark in the district’s history for many centuries. The inn derives its name from the tale of a griffin that used to cause fear among the villages of the Mersey Estuary from its den at the nearby Halton Castle until it was defeated by the local blacksmith, Robert Byrch, earning him the moniker Robert the Bold. Legend has it that as a reward, the king granted him lands as far as he could stretch the hide of the vanquished creature. The crafty blacksmith proceeded to dismember the body and scatter its parts across the region, which eventually became known as Bold Heath.
Less than a five-minute drive from the M62 at Junction 7, yet surrounded by picturesque farmland and peaceful roads, The Griffin Inn is an ideal spot for a scrumptious pub meal or a leisurely Sunday lunch with loved ones. With the bustling port city of Liverpool, the banks of the River Mersey, and the nearby Knowsley Safari Park all within easy reach, this charming country pub is the perfect meeting point for a get-together with friends after a day exploring the Mersey Way, immersing oneself in Liverpool’s vibrant culture and attractions, or admiring Knowsley’s diverse wildlife. Whether you wish to indulge in a delightful pub meal, relish a seasonal special, or treat your family to a laid-back Sunday roast accompanied by a selection of fine wines and cask ales, The Griffin Inn welcomes guests with its warm ambiance and dog-friendly environment.
