A historic, Grade II listed pub, boasting 16th century features and a rich maritime heritage.

About Red Lion

The Red Lion is located near Martlesham in the historic riverside market town of Woodbridge, not far from the Suffolk coast. A former coaching inn on the old London to Yarmouth turnpike road, this attractive Grade II listed country pub boasts a timber-framed plastered exterior and colour-washed brick, retaining many of its 16th-century features, including exposed wooden beams and open fireplaces. The standout feature is the Red Lion figurehead adorning the exterior, seized in 1672 from a Dutch ship at the Battle of Sole Bay, just off the Suffolk coastline. Surrounded by picturesque countryside and close to the secluded Martlesham Creek, a haven for boating enthusiasts, The historic Red Lion is an ideal spot to unwind and socialize. Woodbridge, a charming ancient market town on the banks of the River Deben, is nearby, having been inhabited since the Neolithic Age. Sutton Hoo, a mere 5 miles from The Red Lion, was excavated in 1939, revealing the burial ship of an Anglo-Saxon king with some of the most valuable treasures ever found on British soil. Today, The Red Lion maintains its reputation as a welcoming venue offering a delightful pub menu featuring seasonal dishes and delectable Sunday roasts. Situated in the leafy village of Martlesham, Woodbridge, just eight miles from Ipswich, the Grade II listed Red Lion pub traces its origins back to the late 1500s, marking a significant point on the old London to Yarmouth turnpike road. A former coaching inn, The Red Lion served as an overnight stop for the Royal Mail, safeguarding the post in the pub’s safe until the following day. While parts of the establishment date back to the 16th century, an early 19th century wing stands to the right, with a vibrant Victorian brewery once occupying the site. The Red Lion warmly welcomes guests, providing a charming atmosphere and a diverse menu that caters to all tastes, including dog-friendly options.
