About Chequers Inn

Located in the heart of Hertfordshire, The Chequers Inn is a charming 17th-century Grade II Listed thatched country pub situated on the serene St Albans Road, next to Chequers Lane. Surrounded by lush fields and woodland, this historic establishment offers a picturesque setting for visitors to enjoy. The old River Ver meanders peacefully through the stunning countryside and verdant wetlands of the Ver Valley, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers and walkers alike.

With its traditional oak beams and inviting wood burners, The Chequers Inn provides a cosy atmosphere perfect for fireside dining. The spacious beer garden, adorned with leafy foliage, is a delightful place to relax with friends and family during the warmer months. This dog-friendly venue offers a warm welcome to both two-legged and four-legged guests, ensuring a memorable experience for all visitors.

Guests can savour a taste of history while indulging in the delicious traditional pub fare, seasonal dishes, and hearty Sunday roasts, accompanied by a selection of fine wines and perfectly poured cask ales. The inn’s architecture, featuring a timber frame with painted brick, dates back to the 16th century, as noted by English Heritage. The earliest documented mention of The Chequers Inn dates back to 1760 when it was part of Fish Street Farm, part of the estate of James Grimston, 2nd Viscount Grimston, who served as the MP for St. Albans.

Originally established as a coaching station on the historic Watling Street, The Chequers Inn played a significant role during the ‘Golden Age of Stage-Coaching’ between 1780 and 1830. Situated near the River Ver, the inn was a popular stopping point for Royal Mail coaches travelling to London or York. Despite the decline of stage-coaching with the advent of the railway in 1838, The Chequers Inn continued to flourish under the ownership of Frances Carter Searancke, a renowned brewer from Hatfield.

Today, The Chequers Inn remains a beloved destination for locals and visitors seeking a blend of history, hospitality, and culinary delights in a stunning countryside setting. Whether enjoying a leisurely meal by the fireside or relaxing in the scenic beer garden, guests are sure to create lasting memories at this dog-friendly gem steeped in centuries of tradition.
