Summer has arrived in the UK, bringing warm weather, longer evenings, and the perfect opportunity for adventures with your dog and family.

Naturally, with the beautiful weather, many of us will head to the beach at the slightest glimmer of sun! Whether it’s a day trip or part of a longer holiday, beaches are ideal for enjoying with your furry friends. While some beaches have restrictions during the summer, many remain dog friendly all year around!

Luckily, the UK is home to numerous dog friendly beaches where your dog can run, splash, and play to their heart’s content while you relax.

Let’s explore some of the top UK beaches for you and your furry friends, along with essential tips for a fantastic day out!

Holkham Beach, Norfolk

Holkham Beach, located on the stunning North Norfolk coast, is a true gem. This wide landscape of golden sands is backed by pinewoods and dunes, offering plenty of space for your dog to explore. The beach is dog friendly all year round, with a gentle slope into the sea making it ideal for paddling.

After a long walk, head to the nearby Holkham Village where many cafes and pubs welcome dogs (sadly TailBlazr doesn’t yet cover this area – but do share any you find with us!).

Rhossili Bay, Gower Peninsula

Consistently voted one of the best beaches in the UK, Rhossili Bay in South Wales is a haven for dog lovers. This beach offers breathtaking views and plenty of room for dogs to run off-lead. While dogs are welcome year-round, it’s worth noting that there are some restrictions during the peak summer months as previously mentioned.

The nearby National Trust shop and cafe also cater to four-legged visitors, making it a perfect day out.

Bamburgh Beach, Northumberland

With its iconic castle backdrop, Bamburgh Beach is as historic as it is beautiful. The wide, sandy beach is ideal for dogs to roam freely, and the views are stunning. This beach is dog friendly throughout the year, allowing for plenty of zoomies and walks regardless of the season.

The nearby village of Bamburgh offers a variety of dog-friendly pubs and cafes, ensuring both you and your pet can refuel after a day of coastal adventure.

Westward Ho! Beach, North Devon

Westward Ho! Beach is a fantastic spot in North Devon, near the town of Bideford, for a day out with your dog. The beach boasts two miles of golden sand and a long pebble ridge separating the beach from the land.

During the Summer, dogs are allowed further down the beach by the lifeguard hut. You can enter through the Burrows entrance and walk down the beach from here. The gorgeous sands at low tide are perfect for a game of fetch or a run, and the rock pools offer endless exploration opportunities for both you and your dog.

After a fun-filled day, you can visit one of the many dog-friendly cafes and pubs in the nearby village and town of Bideford including The Pier House. Or you can indulge in a Hocking’s ice cream – a local delicacy!

Making the Most of Your Beach Day

  • Be aware of restrictions: Some beaches have restrictions during the Summer, which may mean your dog isn’t allowed in some areas, so make sure to check before you go.
  • Bring everything you need: Bring fresh water, poo bags, and a towel to dry off your dog after a swim.
  • Hot weather: If it’s a hot day, consider waiting until it’s cooler or find somewhere with plenty of shade!
  • Safety: Be mindful of strong currents and ensure your dog doesn’t drink seawater or eat the sand as it can make them ill.
  • Respect others: Don’t allow your dog to run up to other dogs and people, and keep your dog on the lead if needed.

A glorious day the beach is a wonderful way to enjoy the UK summer with your best friend, when the weather allows! So grab the lead, pack your bags, and head to one of these fantastic beaches for a memorable day out.
