Located on the banks of the picturesque River Yare – the entrance to the Norfolk Broads – is the 16th-century Grade II listed Rushcutters. Situated in the charming village of Thorpe St. Andrew, a designated conservation area of significant architectural and historical importance, this delightful inn-on-the-river offers a tranquil setting. The Rushcutters boasts riverside gardens and a terrace that provide stunning views of the bustling river traffic travelling from nearby Norwich to Great Yarmouth. This 35-mile stretch is popular among boaters, walkers, and cyclists who follow the river route on the Wherryman’s Way trail through the heart of the Broads.
Thorpe St. Andrew is a unique and affluent area that was once part of the estates of the Bishops of Norwich. It served as a fashionable residential location for the affluent residents of Norwich during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Positioned between the River Yare and a steep wooded slope, with panoramic views of Whitlingham Broads and Country Park, the village was once likened to ‘the Richmond of Norfolk’. Numerous grand residences were constructed along the riverbanks, and The Rushcutters, built between 1580 and 1600, stands as one of the oldest buildings in the area.
Guests at The Rushcutters can relish in riverside dining while watching boats and barges pass by serenely during the summer months – the inn even offers its own dog-friendly boat moorings. It is indeed a picturesque spot to while away an afternoon. The Rushcutters presents an extensive pub menu featuring seasonal specials and delicious pub classics available throughout the day. On Sundays, patrons can indulge in a traditional roast dinner complete with unlimited gravy and a generous Yorkshire pudding, accompanied by a superb selection of real ales and fine wines.
