About Britannia

The Britannia is an appealing, historic tavern situated on the banks of the meandering River Nene, a few miles from the centre of historic Northampton, and conveniently close to many of Northamptonshire’s most impressive and significant attractions. The Britannia is located less than two miles south of the stunning Abington Park. To the west, towards the town’s remarkable centre, is Northampton Museum & Art Gallery, which commemorates the town’s proud shoemaking history. The museum houses the white satin shoes worn by Queen Victoria on her wedding day, among other remarkable artefacts.

For anyone exploring this delightful part of Northamptonshire, The Britannia offers a perfect setting for enjoying delectable traditional pub fare, along with a bottle of fine wine or a glass of cask ale by the banks of the River Nene. The charming Britannia pub has stood on the banks of the River Nene for centuries, while the rich history of Northampton and Northamptonshire dates back even further. Just a half-hour stroll away lies Abington Park, where the remnants of a former village are located. Abington’s significant medieval manor house was documented in the 1086 Domesday Book. This expansive and verdant park is situated just across Wellingborough Road from the County Ground, the longstanding home venue of Northampton County Cricket Club, which has hosted matches for more than 125 years and was a site for the 1999 Cricket World Cup.

Amongst the medieval architecture of Northampton’s town centre stands Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. This impressive building in the city’s Cultural Quarter boasts the world’s largest assortment of historical footwear, including boots donned by Prince Albert, renowned Victorian personality Tom Thumb, and notably, the white satin shoes Queen Victoria wore on her wedding day on 10th February 1840. The Britannia is a dog-friendly establishment, welcoming four-legged companions to enjoy the historic charm and scenic beauty of its riverside location.
