Red Lion

  • Dog Friendly

A 16th-century pub, with original beams and flagstone floors, serving traditional Sunday lunches.

About Red Lion

Originally constructed in the 16th century by the local Parish council to serve their own ale to the faithful community, The Red Lion boasts a rich and intriguing history, retaining much of its original charm. Inside, visitors will discover ancient wooden beams that are over 400 years old, authentic open fires, and flagstone floors. This traditional country pub provides a welcoming setting to relish a satisfying meal. Guests can delight in a choice of roast meats or a delectable vegetarian option on Sundays. The traditional Sunday lunches come complete with a generous Yorkshire pudding and unlimited gravy, making it a delightful culinary experience. The earliest documented record of The Red Lion is a rent receipt from 1629, indicating a payment of £1 for ‘rent of the churchowse’. The church retained ownership of The Red Lion until its sale in 1948. Established over four centuries ago by the local Parish, this charming pub has a fascinating history closely intertwined with the community. In historical context, church houses like The Red Lion were vital meeting places where individuals could enjoy ale brewed by the church for fundraising purposes and to support those in need. Ale served as a staple beverage, often considered safer than water during that era. These church houses operated on select days, primarily during religious celebrations like Whitsun, akin to the modern-day church halls. Parishioners had the opportunity to hire the church house for private events, with the proceeds contributing to the church’s finances. As the 17th century progressed, such church houses gradually vanished, marking the end of an era. The Red Lion continues to stand as a testament to this bygone tradition, offering a glimpse into the historical significance of such establishments while providing a warm and inviting atmosphere for guests, including those with furry companions seeking a dog-friendly environment.
