Three Horseshoes

The Three Horseshoes is situated in the charming village of Spellbrook along the historic London turnpike road, near the scenic River Stort. This idyllic thatched-roof country pub and former coaching inn boasts a rich history, originally a Tudor farmhouse with a fairytale appearance dating back to the 16th century. Strategically located on the route from London to Cambridge and East Anglia, close to the essential river crossing in nearby Bishop’s Stortford, The Three Horseshoes holds Grade II listed status.

During the 18th century, the establishment of the Hockerill Turnpike Trust led to the enhancement of coach roads and the commencement of a mail coach service in 1785. The transformation of the River Stort into a ‘Navigation’ in 1769 was pivotal, enabling long barges laden with grain and malt to traverse to London, thereby revolutionising Bishop’s Stortford’s thriving malting industry. The Three Horseshoes is a dog-friendly venue, welcoming visitors to enjoy its historic charm and picturesque surroundings.
