The Swan pub is located in Ash Vale, a rural village adorned with winding country lanes and inspiring landscapes in the stunning Surrey countryside. The star attraction is the picturesque Basingstoke Canal, a haven for nature enthusiasts who enjoy exploring its towpaths. Ash Vale’s development was influenced by its significant transport connections, including a railway station and the renowned Basingstoke Canal. Completed in 1794, the waterway was constructed to link Basingstoke with the River Thames at Weybridge via the Way Navigation, enabling boats to journey from the docks in east London. In the 1850s, the military presence in the area led to the Swan becoming a military pub, complete with a rat trap outside that served as a makeshift prison. Historically, the Swan was owned by the Tupper family, and as times changed, the pub underwent a complete transformation into a cosy, family-friendly venue. Following years of neglect, the restoration of the Basingstoke Canal began in 1977, culminating in its reopening on 10th May 1991, providing access from the River Wey to just before the Greywell tunnel. This restoration project has granted walkers, cyclists, anglers, and canoeists over 32 miles of canal to enjoy. The Swan, a dog-friendly establishment, is open throughout the week, offering a traditional pub menu and seafood specials that are always popular with the locals. Tables can be booked online in advance to ensure a pleasant dining experience. Situated on the tranquil banks of the Basingstoke Canal in the picturesque village of Ash Vale, The Swan allows guests to dine alfresco while taking in the breathtaking Surrey countryside.
